The delegation first visited Huang Nipo preschool, Xiajia Village, Puchuan County. There is a mixed-age class with 13 children in the preschool, in old times, they used to go to the town central kindergarten, which is 3 to 5 kilometers away from the village, meaning 10 kilometers to go back and forth every day. Ever since there is a preschool in the village, parents are pleased to send their children here because a lot of time is saved. The preschools was established on the site of a closed down village primary school, which was vacant since the school reform many years ago; as introduced by Project Leader Yang Chunbo, there were barely facilities here, even the beams of a few rooms had collapsed. Then, with the support of the project, the roof and floor were renovated to solve the problem of rain leakage, and the children could have their separate classroom, nap room, outdoor activity space and clean toilets. Teacher Zhao Linzhuan also carefully decorated the preschool classrooms with children's paintings and plasticine. The desks, chairs, and books in the classroom are all in good order.

This teaching characteristics of inspiring children's thinking and imagination ability through questioning and guidance is commonly used in the POF preschool teaching. Mr. Day talked with teachers and field staff of the project to learn about the progress of preschool construction and teaching, as well as the difficulties and demands of the project.

In the parent-child handicraft class on that day, the teacher invited all the parents to attend. Mr. Day and Michael joined the class together, doing handicraft together with the children in an interactive atmosphere. The children showed curiosity and joy at the arrival of strangers, their eyes shining with delight. At the meantime, a brief exchange was held for the parents to express their opinions and recognitions on the changes brought by the preschool, through which Mr. Day also understood the teaching situation, toys and equipment facilities etc. According to teacher's feedback, the POF project not only pays attention to development of children in terms of teaching, but also conveys the importance of environment creation in the preschool to teachers through different trainings as well. It is very useful to motivate parents and children to decorate their preschool together and create an atmosphere suitable for children through the handicraft classes.Children are sensitive, growing plants and observing animals with them is a great key to explore children's inner world.

About the Project:

The POF project of Tengchong County of Humana People to People is supported by Tin Ka Ping Foundation. The Project takes early childhood education as its starting point and uses vacant rooms in the village as classrooms to run non-profit preschool. Parents recruit young people with junior high school education background or above and train them to become qualified preschool teachers. The course is about nature, animals, nutrition, hygiene and how to express yourself through art and music. Mixed-age classes, where children are usually 3 to 6 years old, prepare children for primary school by attending the preschool education. At the same time, the project organizes the local communities to set up parent committees to participate in the management of the preschools. With the company of preschool teachers and children of the same age level, left-behind children can grow up healthily in body and mind, narrow the gap in early childhood education between rich and poor areas, and break the vicious circle of intergenerational transmission of poverty.
