This case story serves to promote the expansion of HIV Home Testing in HIV/AIDS high-risk areas in Liangshan Prefecture. The project is supported by China Association of STD and AIDS Prevention and Control. The project is implemented by Field Officers through door-to-door visits where they deliver HIV/AIDS related knowledge through face to face encounters, so as to promote common people’s awareness of prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.

By a Field Officer——Liu Min

Today as usual, I went to Ruilong village, Darui Township, with my colleague Zhao Weiwei for the first time. The mountain road to this village was covered with sharp stones, and we got lost several times. It was a new project site and we wasted more than one hour on the way before we finally met Mr. Shama Shebumu, the Field Officer.

He updated us on his recent work progress and then we paid home visits to two families. When we arrived at the third family’s house, the hostess warmly invited us in, we immediately introduced ourselves. After the introductions the woman started telling us about her illness. She said she was not in such good health and that she had recently returned home. I shared a lot about HIV/AIDS information and basic knowledge with her, and she was then motivated to accept the HIV Test. She was willing to take the Home-based Rapid Test which gave her more privacy.

The result was good news, she was not infected. She was so pleased to hear that and she expressed her great gratitude to us for several times. She said she felt so thankful that we had come all the way through the mountains to give her free HIV/AIDS education. She said she felt being trapped in the darkness and panic for quite a long time, since she was living with HIV positive people, who included her relatives and neighbors. She appreciated our door-to-door visit very much, which she said had brought her light and a way out of the terrible situation she felt she was living in. When we heard this, all of us were overjoyed and felt the great value of paying home visits, and realized that all our time and effort was greatly rewarded.
