Dr. Gu Jianlong from Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Clean Development Mechanism Center (CDM) has been providing a variety of trainings to the farmers and Project staff of Farmers’ Club (FC) Xundian for the past 2 years. His expertise is greatly appreciated by the community and the project. In May he introduced a new methane gas measuring equipment which was installed in 4 farmers’ fields. From then a collection of air samples were collected and sent to the Environmental Science Research Institute in Kunming where further analysis on the gas samples is being carried out. The purpose of the measurements is to explore how much methane is saved by using the “RPQPT ” method of rice planting compared with the traditional way of planting.

On the 15th of August Dr. Gu Jianlong was invited to give training to Humana People to People (HPP) Project Leaders who work with Rural Development projects. His introduction focused on Global Warming, the effects Global Warming has on the environment and on human beings. He mentioned how this will affect humanity negatively in terms of decreasing food security. During his presentation he also mentioned some of the policies introduced in the Kyoto Protocol. He explained the policies China has set down for its certified emission reduction credits (CER credits). He said China is planning to undergo several trials and also to further expand these plans to other places and he mentioned that Yunnan is one of the provinces included in the plans.

One of the HPP Project Leaders asked whether the people/farmers understand about these weather changes. Dr. Gu’s response was that, “of course the farmers have noticed that the seasons are changing and the rainfall is now inconsistent, but the truth is they lack knowledge of what exactly is causing all this”. He emphasized the necessity of farmers getting education to understand about Global Warming. Another question was which challenges China faces in terms of creating a market for Carbon Credit. Dr. Gu explained that one challenge is that carbon credits is a relatively new thing, so many tools and mechanisms are still not in place to make it a stable market.

According to Dr. Gu Jianlong Humana People to People (HPP) Rural Development Projects have a lot of work to do in educating the farmers and in finding solutions which can help the farmers adapt to the changing climate, at the same time playing a part in the fight for carbon emission reduction.  The farmers should also be educated in adopting sustainable agricultural practices. This involves finding crops which can survive changing weather patterns and using methods of cultivation which do not destroy the soil.
