Farmers’ Green Action Club Approach to Agriculture, Water and Hygiene Improvement is a 3 year program. The project started on the 1st of August 2016 and will end on the 31st of July 2019. The project objectives are: To reduce poverty through increase of skills, production and improved access to markets; to protect the planet by promoting sustainable agriculture and improving water management; to improve sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and health conditions in rural communities and to improve construction of local infrastructure and living condition. To achieve its objectives 1 Farmers’ Green Action Instructor (FGA Instructor) was recruited and mobilization of the farmers was done. Through this mobilization 6 Farmers’ Green Action Clubs (FGA Clubs) were established, organized from the 250 member households. Club committees were selected among these club members. The Project Leader will continue to give weekly training to the FGA Instructor, comprising of agricultural knowledge and skills, environmental education, health, nutrition and sanitation. The FGA Instructor and the Humana People to People Project Leader will together give training to the FGA Club committees on a monthly basis. The FGA Instructor will train FGA Club members on a weekly basis. Apart from these ongoing trainings the project will construct 1 big water cistern with 1 filtering pool. The project will also install 50 solar heaters and construct 6 garbage pools.

Getting to know about the project area

Zhao Weiwei is the Project Leader for Farmers’ Clubs Sanyuan. After she returned from Africa, where she was trained in project management, she took the challenge to manage this project. Here she tells us about how she started up in Sanyuan.

“In the beginning I thought it would be easy to find a young FGA Instructor, but it turned out to be a big challenge. After all introductions and agreements were made with the Local Poverty Alleviation Office, Local Government and Local Village Leaders, I visited the villages in Sanyuan to find out more about the area and how I could go about finding a FGA Instructor. I was a little discouraged to see that there were only old people in the villages. Most young people have left as migrant workers. “Where will I find the FGA Instructor who can do all this work, and are the elderly people in the village going to understand what we need to do?” These were the questions which ran through my mind. But regardless of that no youth were to be found in the village I managed to find 1 FGA Instructor, a 60 year old man. He is very active and understands everything about the village, having experience from once being a village leader. After the interview I first trained him about Humana People to People (HPP) so that he could have an understanding of our project ideas and concept. I also trained him in community mobilization, planning, data collection and filling out different forms related to our work. After that he was ready to mobilize the farmers to start up the Farmers’ Green Action Clubs. So far we have established 6 Clubs with varying members according to the geographical set up of the villages. After that together with the FGA Instructor we carried out need-assessment so that we could know more about the villages, their needs and what trainings they think would best benefit them. In September we also carried out a baseline survey. From my assessment of the situation in the village the main problem is water. The villagers have to walk for long distances to draw water. I think the construction of the water cistern will benefit the farmers a lot. We have so far presented the project activities to the villagers and told them that the project will help in the construction of the cistern. The farmers are enthusiastic about this and they have suggested that we start the construction as early as possible. Some households are far from the site where the water cistern will be constructed. The nearest household is about 100 meters from the site and yet the furthest is about
800meters. But all in all the villagers are happy that the project will help in the construction of the water cistern, solar water heaters and in helping them to develop their productions.”

Humana People to People (HPP) has been operating in Chongqing for the past 6 years. The first two rural development projects to be started in Chongqing were Farmers’ Clubs Wanzhou (a project which was funded by Citi Foundation and started in January 2011) and Community Development Project which was funded by Bayer (which also started in 2011). In 2012 another Farmers’ Club project was started in Fengdu, funded by Carrefour Foundation. In 2014 yet another Farmers’ Club project started in Wulong, Haokou funded by Citi Foundation. The above described Farmers’ Club project in Fengdu, San Yuan was started in August 2016.

The project is supported by the Kadoorie Charitable Foundation.
