Huang Min is one of the Project Leaders for Preschools of the Future (POF) in Butuo. She was previously educated at Frontline Institute in Zimbabwe, a project management institution focused on developing Project Leaders’ skills into taking action in poor areas, where development is needed. After returning to China she was part of starting up POF schools in Ximeng County, in Puer, Yunnan.

Now she is working with POF in Butuo, a poverty stricken area in Sichuan, Lianghshan. Here she tells about a teacher training in POF Butuo.

45 instructors participated in the teacher training

A lot of games made the training lively

“The training took place from 22nd to 25th of August. Out of the 80 instructors in our POF schools 45 instructors participated in the training. The trainers included 2 persons from the  Butuo County Education and Science Technology Intellectual Property Bureau (BoE), 2 Program developers from Humana People to People Project Service Center, 3 staff members from POF Butuo Project and 6 students from Sichuan Normal University. The training consisted of the following: Importance of Mandarin in Rural education, presented by Luo Ying , a teacher from Puge Middle School, followed by watching a very impressive film “Not one less” which tells about a very young teacher who struggles to bring back one student who left school, going to the city. The teacher who has been told to take good care of the children, not willing to lose a single student, makes a great effort in looking for this boy.”

Students from Sichuan Normal University presented 5 topics: 1) Daily preschool routines 2) Preschool concept 3) How to tell children stories 4) Children’s dances and 5) Preschool outdoor activities. Sau Wa from the Humana People to People (HPP) Project Service Center gave training on “teacher’s ethics” for early childhood teaching. Xiao Yang, also from HPP Project Service Center, gave training about music. Zhang Chunmei, a Project leader in POF Butuo, gave presentation about project management and tools. The training furthermore trained the teachers in filling “The 12 main figures” (a control system used in HPP for measuring the achievements in daily work).

“The training was very lively with the university students coming up with different games and stories, which the instructors could use in teaching preschool children. It was much fun to be involved in singing, story-telling and dancing. I believe the capacity of the instructors was built by this training, they for sure learned a lot, but some of them were not so lively. Maybe they were shy. I hope as we give them more of such trainings they will be encouraged and enthusiastic about it. Building the capacity of the instructors is very important and will benefit the preschool children and their parents.

The trainer encouraged everyone to participate actively

On top of this training of instructors, we were invited to a three and a half days workshop by Butuo County Education and Science Technology Intellectual Property Bureau. 2 people from the project participated in this training: Zhang Chunmei and me. The training consisted of the following topics: 1) Child psychology 2) Photography as means of learning 3) Students’ safety 4) HIV/AIDS control and prevention 5) Students’ health (development, management and discipline). We were involved in exchange of views and a lot of discussions. I learnt a lot from this training and I have become wiser. I hope that in future we will continue to participate in such trainings because it helps to broaden our knowledge and insight on how to deal with different issues concerning our work. Learning about Child Psychology is also an important issue in order to give the children the best input and best chances in life.

When we participate in such trainings as project leaders the knowledge spreads fast as we are “trainers of trainers”, passing on the knowledge to the rest of the staff.
