Citi Foundation and HPPC’s collaborative rural micro-enterprise development project in Wanzhou district saw a successful closure, in 2014 the project model is replicated to Wulong County of Chongqing Municipality.

The project applies HPP’s sustainable community development project model to 6 low income villages in Wulong County’s Haokou Miao ethnic minority region, extending the benefits of micro-lending to approximately 6000 villagers. Project supports participating households to increase incomes, providing them with financial literacy trainings, new farming methods to increase yields, introduction of new crops and livestock rearing methods. The project ultimately connects farmers to the value chain, giving them access to markets and credit which was previously little available to there.

This project adopted HPP’s Farmers’ clubs’ operation model, there are now 29 Farmers’ Clubs established under the current project; through a Community Development Fund (CDF) mechanism, microloans are dispensed to the farmers.

Project Progress: In January HPP project office, Wulong Poverty Alleviation Office, Haokou township government and village leaders organized a meeting to discuss project matters. Hiring of farming instructor in each village is complete.

Training:

After Chinese New Year, project began procurement of office furniture and stationary. Training of the farming instructors commenced on 15th February. During the training, farming instructors received a basic outline of the Humana project, watched educational videos about Global Warming and HIV/AIDS prevention. Following the screenings and presentations, a heated discussion among the training participants ensued.

After the training, farming instructors begin their jobs: visiting the villagers’ homes one by one, mobilizing villagers to participate in the project.

In order to support the farming instructors’ work, project manager Yang Jingui paid visit to villagers and local leaders from Sanhui village to familiarize with the local circumstances.
