At the end of 2021, the Education Department of Yunnan Province issued the Guiding on Integrating ecological civilization Education into the education and teaching of Primary and secondary schools and Kindergartens, which emphasized the importance and urgency of ecological civilization education.

For social organizations with long-standing roots in remote rural areas for early childhood education, how can they create innovative classes on ecological civilization education on the basis of public welfare projects, which can not only well maintain the rich natural resources in rural areas, but also improve the low-carbon and environmental protection awareness of children, families and the whole community?

Based on the experience of the low-carbon school pilot project carried out by HPP in and around Kunming, Yunnan Province, the "Preschools of the Future"(POF) project began to take advantage of its long-term roots in rural areas and created the innovative project model of "Green POF”, injecting new vitality into rural early childhood education.

Nowadays, with the rapid development of rural economy and urbanization, local residents' awareness of low-carbon environmental protection has not been improved with the increase of consumption level. On the contrary, children's parents and villagers are still not aware of low carbon environmental protection.

The project team explored the appropriate and unique ecological civilization education for rural children based on the low-carbon pilot project and the actual situation of the local countryside in Tengchong POF classes.

Through the preschool activities, parents‘ and the whole community’s awareness of environmental protection has been improved in the daily production and life.

Low carbon corner’s creation

The project team led Menglian preschool teachers and children to collect waste cardboard and paper, and to make waste classification bins: recyclable waste bins and harmful waste bins. Then according to the children's favorite cartoon graphics, they decorated the bins into a beautiful "waste classification - low-carbon corner".

At the preschool teachers and children put the daily waste into the corresponding bins, they could understand the knowledge of waste classification and the recycling of old things.

Parent-child environmental graffiti

Preschool-home co-education is an important work of preschool class. In Tengchong POF project, the project team regularly supports parent-child activities carried out by the teachers which could mobilize parents and children to participate in low-carbon environmental protection learning.

Children learn the importance and urgency of protecting the environment: natural resources and the villages, rice fields, rivers and forests that people depend on for their livelihoods.

Environmental protection classes

The preschool teachers organized rural low-carbon activity classes combined with rural children and environmental conditions, including the production of environmental bags, environmental songs, how to save water, planting and so on.

Moreover, the project team also held parent meetings to introduce the impact of climate change, environmental pollution on their lives, and the way to protect the environment by planting trees, sorting waste, and reducing the use of single-use plastic products and so on.

At present, low-carbon environmental protection has become a regular daily teaching activity of Tengchong Preschools of the Future classes, which has been recognized and affirmed by teachers, parents and local education departments. This is a great progress forward in the practice of ecological civilization education in rural preschool education.

At the same time, HPP is also making great efforts to strengthen the perfect fit between ecological civilization education and the Preschools of the Future project, innovating the project model of "Green POF". HPP’s other similar projects and other institutions are learning from "Green POF" and further promoting this model project into practical activities.

Ecological civilization is the only way for rural revitalization, which cannot be achieved without the guidance of ecological civilization. The Green POF project hopes to contribute to the construction of rural revitalization through the practice of ecological civilization education and building an ecologically livable and beautiful countryside.

Project introduction:

Tengchong POF is funded by Tin Ka Ping Foundation, and HPP cooperates with Tengchong Education and Sports Bureau to assist in the implementation of the "One village, one preschool" policy. The project takes early education as the entry point, improves the hardware facilities and teaching aids of preschool classes and organizes professional and systematic training for teachers regularly. The project team regularly supervises preschool classes to help teachers solve difficulties and problems in daily teaching activities. In addition, the preschool classes have set up the parent committee, carried out parent training and promoted preschool-home co-education. The project focuses on game-based teaching, provides tools such as teacher management kits and teaching materials, improves the coverage of preschool education in rural areas, and improves the quality of preschool education in rural areas, so that more children can receive high-quality preschool education.

This project is supported by the Tin Ka Ping Foundation.
