Liangshan Yi-minority Children Community Health Project is sponsored by Baxter International Foundation which is an independent charity organization belonging to Baxter Healthcare and co-sponsored by Humana People to People (HPP) who developed the project and will implement it. The project focuses on improving children’s health. The project budget is US$134,685 over 2 years. The project aims at improving local Yi Children’s nutritional status and enhancing the community’s awareness of health, nutrition, and hygiene. An estimated over 200 children and 1200 households would benefit from the project.

The high mountain region of Greater Liangshan has some developmental challenges due to its harsh environment, remote transportations, lower economic development and traditional living habits, - and its local public health infrastructure is not fully reaching all people, and people's health consciousness is weak.  Moreover, cold mountain climatic conditions limit the variety of crops species with potatoes being the main staple, and poor nutrient intake leads to many children being undernourished and even stunting. What’s worse, influenced by HIV, there are a number of children who lost parents and could only get limited care or love. Therefore, one of the important development tasks in Liangshan is to improve local children’s nutrition and cultivate health consciousness and good hygiene habits to promote their healthy growth. Under this circumstances, Liangshan Yi-minority Children Community Health Project comes into being.

The project will be implemented in Matuo Township and Naituo Town in Yuexi County, Liangshan Prefecture. The project will provide physical examinations for 200 local children. And 40 Self-help Health Action Groups for 1200 households will be established, which will be trained in nutrition, health and hygiene by the village-level coordinator and relevant trainers. The project will cooperate with Yuexi County Maternal Child Hospital and Disease Control Center to hold training seminars for the staff of township hospitals and doctors in villages. In addition, the project will carry out a series of activities, such as home visits, establishment of kitchen gardens and animal breeding training and etc. It plans to gradually promote Liangshan children’s health situation through health care consciousness cultivation and nutrition knowledge and skills training.
