The following case story comes from Farmer’s Clubs Project in Xundian County, a Piloting Carbon Financing Development for Community Driven Climate Smart Agriculture in Yunnan. The project is supported by Blue Moon Fund. This project tries to seek a win-win solution that ordinary farmers can be organized in Farmer’s Clubs to increase income by improving their planting techniques and at the same time reducing carbon emissions.

On the 17th of May, the project invited Yang Congdang from Rice Research Center under Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences to come and give farmers a field-training on precise quantification planting of rice in Changjiaba village of Xiaojie at 09:30am.

Even though we started out early from the county site, we arrived at Changjiaba at exactly 9:30am because we had taken a long route on account of the road which was being repaired. There was no time for preparation, but the farmers gathered immediately when the saw Professor Yang arrived. Having limited time, the project staff only gave a brief introduction to Professor. Yang, who is a well-known research expert, and is a core member of creating the precise quantification of rice plantation technology, knowledgeable in rice plantation and having rich training experience with famers in the field.

He often goes into the field and is good at communicating with farmers, and he uses easy-to-understand language for farmers when giving explanations on rice plantation and advantages and “key points of precise quantification of rice plantation”. The on-the-spot training was vibrant and all the farmers were actively participating. The farmers seized the opportunity to ask about some issues and difficulties they encountered in the rice planting. Professor Yang patiently gave them explanations.

Afterwards farmers reflected that they clearly understand about the technology of precise quantification of rice planting, and the training is a great help for their further planting of rice and they hope they can have more of such trainings.
