"All say sugar-coated haws are sour, the sour inside it is wrapped in sweet. It is said that sugar-coated haws are sweet, but sweet inside that sour..." Whenever I listen to this song, a string of red and delicious sugar-coated haws will appear in my mind.

Sugar-coated haws is one of the traditional Chinese snacks, its taste is sweet and sour, lovable, not only delicious but also very good looking, a fruit string on the skewer, wrapped in a layer of crystal clear sugar as if it put on a tulle, it is very attractive!

Today, the Haikou preschool class children came together to make sugar-coated haws, we prepared hawthorn, strawberries, blueberries, oranges, bananas, cherry tomatoes and other fruits. After the teacher explained the origin and practice of sugar-coated haws to the children, the children could not wait to run out of the classroom.

Under the guidance of the teacher, the children lined up to wash their hands, picked up bamboo skewers to choose their favorite fruits and began to make the  sugar-coated haws in winter. You like oranges, I like hawthorn, the children get together, pick the fruit they like to string together, and make a string of their own sugar-coated haws.

The teacher then made sugar syrup, and the children lined up to put sugar on syrup , wrapped in glutinous rice paper, waiting for the sugar to solidify. A skewer full of fruit, wrapped in crystal clear icing, like enchanted gems. The children gently bite down, the sugar is crisp and cracked, the sour and sweet of the fruit spread on the tip of the tongue, the perfect blend of sour and sweet, so that the children have a deeper understanding and love of this traditional snack.

Sugar-coated haws present enduring traditional production processes, after hundreds of years of circulation they are still attractive. A string of sugar-coated haws, hiding the sweet and sour fruit, hides the joy of children's first time to self create sugar-coated haws, but also shows the children's yearning and hope for a better life.
