The Fengdu Farmers’ Clubs project sponsored by Carrefour Foundation was initiated in January 2012. The project spanning a period of three years will reach three administrative villages: Honghuapo village, Baiguoyuan village and Qinggangping village in Baoluan Town. 1000 farming households will benefit from the project. By end of 2013, the project has already run for two years. The local government and villagers have shown their appreciation and approval for the tangible results achieved.

Fengdu Farmers’ Clubs is a participatory poverty alleviation project, ultimately achieving better market channels and access for the farmers’ produce. One part of the project concept is to connect Farmers’ Clubs to Chongqing Carrefour supermarkets’ value chain. It is a mutually beneficial operation which can provide fresh, high quality produce Carrefour while also providing a market channel for farmers in Fengdu.

Project results praised by local government and villagers:

After witnessing the proven success of Honghuapo villages’ goat raising project (2012), the local government in October 2013 decided to subsidize villagers RMB500 for each goat they purchase as a way to encourage the goat rearing agribusiness.

Based on the projects’ successful operation for two years, in 2013 Fengdu Poverty Alleviation Office contributed RMB400,000 as subsidy for Farmers’ Clubs’ purchasing of walnut trees. A total area of 1200 mu of land was designated in the three respective administrative villages for establishing a walnut tree plantation of scale. Hopes are placed on the new agribusiness activity to improve and bring vitality to the existing economic structure of the villages. The walnut tree planting not only can increase incomes for farmers, but also serves to purify the air and contribute to mitigation of Global Warming.

Government support for our project is certainly an encouraging endorsement; it feeds energy into the on-going poverty alleviation efforts and helps to further the healthy and sustainable development of the villages.

Growth conditions of the walnut trees is good.
